In the last few years, the Wrocław University of Technology campus has grown significantly. New buildings, co-financed from EU funds, have been erected. The campus looks good and modern and the architecture of the new buildings has been appreciated by specialist magazines.
The oldest of the new buildings in the campus is of course the “Cheese House” (C-13 building), erected in 2006 and put into operation in 2007. Citizens of Wrocław like this building very much and in Poland our University is very often associated with this structure. The C-13 building won a prize in the competition “Piękny Wrocław” (“Beautiful Wrocław”), organized by the Municipality of Wrocław and the Wrocław Lovers’ Society. It was also awarded a special prize in the “Dolnośląskie Construction of the Year 2007/2008”, organized by the Polish Association of Civil Engineering Engineers and Technicians, and Agnieszka Rumińska included it in her book “101 most interesting Polish buildings of the decade”. The structure was also nominated to the Mies van der Rohe prize awarded by the European Commission to buildings standing out by their structural, technological or conceptual features.
But the “Cheese House” has gain many new competitors that are characterized by interesting, modern architecture, such as the Bibliotech (seat of the Inter-university Library of Exact and Technical Sciences) or the Technopolis. Also the surroundings of the buildings is much prettier. Now it’s possible to have a seat on a bench that is adapted to the architecture of the campus or relax on the lawn. A walk through the Wrocław University of Technology campus is a real pleasure, so we encourage to go for one, at least virtually, thanks to the photos of our photographer, Krzysztof Mazur.
More information on EU financing that our University has benefitted from will be presented in the special May 2014 edition of “Pryzmat”, issued on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Poland joining the EU.
