For us, this is a ceremonial beginning. We accept new members of our society, students of the first year – said Rector of Wrocław University of Technology, Prof. Tadeusz Więckowski, during the inauguration of the academic year. Over 9 thousand young people started their studies at the University.

The most important projects are already completed or will be accomplished soon – said Rector. – We renovated the old building, Geocentrum is already functioning, soon the Bibliotech and Students Culture Zone will be opened. The cable car Polinka, probably the most famous project, has been put into operation – enumerated Prof. Więckowski. He also congratulated the academic staff on their numerous prizes and impressing research results. Rector praised the students for their outstanding scientific activity. - The strength of Wrocław University of Technology lies in the people. Owing to them, we managed to build a strong university – emphasized Rector. Prof. Daria Lipińska-Nałęcz, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, said: - Wrocław University of Technology is a fascinating example that it is not necessary to encourage the scientific society to co-operate with the economy. You have been doing this for a long time. I would like to congratulate you on your scientific achievements and the amazing number of patents and inventions filed at the Polish Patent Office. Traditionally, on 1st October the Wrocław University of Technology Aula was visited by representatives of the regional and municipal authorities, as well as rectors of partner universities from Poland and abroad (e.g. from Moscow, Sydney, and Ukraine). Representatives of the 12 faculties took an oath. - I would like to inform that the students will not obtain a grade book, as we use only an electronic version – explained Assistant Professor Janusz Górniak, DSc, master of the ceremony. Together with the Academic Choir of Wrocław University of Technology and the professors, the newly admitted students sang the “Gaudeamus igitur” hymn. Prof. Imre Rudas from Obuda University in Budapest and Prof. Henryk Kozłowski from the University of Wrocław joined the list of Honorary Professors of Wrocław University of Technology. Also, special Rector’s prizes “Docendo Discimus” for remarkable achievements in teaching were awarded. This year’s laureates included: Iwona Poźniak-Koszałka, DSc, from the Faculty of Electronics, Prof. Halina Kwaśnicka from the Faculty of Computer Science and Management, Prof. Maciej Chorowski from the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Prof. Tomasz Nowakowski from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Jacek Radojewski, DSc, from the Faculty of Microsystem Electronics and Photonics, and Assistant Professor Irina Modrzycka, PhD, from the Department of Foreign Languages. The inauguration lecture, entitled “Innovation and future jobs” was delivered by Robin Barnett, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Poland.
