For the 60th time, the Countrywide Chemistry Contest for high school students will be organized this year. “In our laboratories we will carry out the practical part of the contest” – says Elżbieta Wojaczyńska, DSc, from the Wrocław University of Technology Faculty of Chemistry. She adds that every year the contest gathers pupils whose knowledge reaches far beyond the teaching programme for high schools. “They are really outstanding” – admits Wojaczyńska. The district leg of the contest will start with the theoretical part (31st January, University of Wrocław Faculty of Chemistry). On the second day of the contest, 23 pupils will compete in the laboratories of Wrocław University of Technology (1st Fabruary, 9 AM – 2 PM). In the meantime, teachers that guide the pupils will meet the authorities of chemistry faculties at the two universities to talk e.g. about the methods of teaching chemistry. “It’s a prestigious contest with a long history. At our faculty there are employees that were laureates of the contest in the previous years” – says Wojaczyńska. The best competitors of the second leg will qualify for the countrywide finals that will take place on 4th and 5th April in Warsaw. Iwona Szajner, Translation: Dariusz Więcławski
