Prof. Tadeusz Więckowski, Rector of Wrocław University of Technology, received two awards for merits for the development and promotion of the Wałbrzyski Poviat – one for the University and one for himself.
“This is an award for the University as an institution but also for the Rector, for setting guidelines for the co-operation between the University and the Wałbrzych region.” – said Jerzy Detyna, President of the Wałbrzyski Poviat Council.
“Establishing deep roots in the Dolnośląskie region is part of our mission, included in the Wrocław University of Technology Development Strategy. We are implementing this policy e.g. by transforming our regional branches into individual, fully-fledged faculties. Hence, in 2014 our University will have three new faculties, including the Faculty of Technology and Engineering in Wałbrzych.” – explained the Rector. “We don’t want to replicate the activities already carried out at the University but we are aiming at developing new specializations, basing on the region’s potential.” Expressing gratitude for the prize, Rector emphasized that he considers it an acknowledgement of not only his own work but also of the work of the staff co-operating with him, most notably the Senate and the directors of the branches. “We gathered forces to initiate this process of transformation that will bring benefits both for the University and for the region. I am aware that it won’t be easy.” – said Prof. Więckowski.
Józef Piksa, Staroste of the Wałbrzyski Poviat, emphasized that the establishment of a new Wrocław University of Technology faculty in Wałbrzych is a huge and important step in the development of the region. “We are part of the Wałbrzych agglomeration that is composed of over a dozen of communes inhabited by over 500 thousand people. Young people will now be able to study here, locally, and apply for jobs in the local industry.” – said the Staroste. “We expect that the faculty will not only teach students but also carry out scientific research for the benefit of our local economy. And this will propel the development of the industry and provide new jobs.” – added Jerzy Detyna.
Representatives of the Wałbrzyski Poviat visited Wrocław University of Technology on 11 December 2013.
