How to facilitate the life of disabled students? Is the printing of educational material in Braille and elimination of architectural barriers a sufficient help? These issues were addressed by guests of the meeting organized as part of the “Breakfast talks about studying” project. The project is composed of three meetings that are supposed to answer the question about the quality of education of young disabled people and what can be done to enhance their access to education and career. “During the first meeting we talked about inclusive education, the second one was dedicated to the need for psychological support for disabled students. During the third we want to discuss how universities support disabled students and what can be done to make this support more effective.” – said Dorota Burczyc from the “Twoje Nowe Możliwości” (“Your New Opportunities”) association. One of the guests invited for the third meeting was Jerzy Borowiec, Rector’s Plenipotentiary for the Problems of People with Disabilites and President of the Foundation for the Development of Wrocław University of Technology. “Our university provides support for disabled students. For example, we conduct special foreign language courses during which the teacher devotes all his time to one person. We implemented special software that allows magnifying of the texts presented which is very helpful for the sand-blind. There are also assistants who, for example, can take notes for them. Also, each year we organize a study-and-rehabilitation camp. Also, disabled students can study and sit exams in an individual form.” – said Jerzy Borowiec. Also, Krzysztof Peda (founder and President of the “Twoje Nowe Możliwości” association) and Ariel Fecyk (Vice-President of the association), both graduates of Wrocław University of Technology, were present at the meeting. The guests included also Anna Rutz, Plenipotentiary for Students with Disabilities at the Students Parliament of the Republic of Poland and Aleksander Waszkielewicz, President of the Institute of Regional Development foundation. The meeting was held on Thursday, 12th December at 11 AM in the “Bernard” restaurant at Market Square in Wrocław. All the three meetings were organized by the “Twoje Nowe Możliwości” association in co-operation with the State Fund for Rehabilitation of People with Disabilities. mj Translation by Dariusz Więcławski
