European BEST Engineering Competition 2014 (phot. Katarzyna Górowicz-Maćkiewicz)

Until 7 April, teams of 4 engineering students can apply for EBEC (European BEST Engineering Competition). First, they will have to pass the qualification test, then take part in the local finals at Wrocław University of Technology, and the best ones will go to Warsaw to participate in the national finals
EBEC requires from young and future engineers logical thinking and the ability to put theory to practice.
The teams with the best results in the test will qualify for the local finals. And the test questions may be surprising, since they check not only knowledge but also inventiveness. For example, in the previous years the students had to solve the following problem: “A football ball is made of white and black pieces of leather. The black pieces are regular pentagons, and the white pieces are regular hexagons. Each pentagon adheres with its sides to five hexagons, and each hexagon adheres to three pentagons and three hexagons. How many white hexagons are there on the ball surface if the number of black pentagons is 12?”
Additionally, half of the questions and problems are in English, since the European EBEC finals are in this language. You can apply for the competition here.
This year’s qualification test will be held on 9 April, and the local finals will be organized on 28 April at a number of Polish universities, including Wrocław University of Technology.
The best teams of the local finals will meet at the national finals (21-23 May in Warsaw), the winners of which will go to Porto to participate in the European finals (1-8 August).
BEST (the Board of European Students of Technology) is the originator of the competition. BEST is an organization of students from entire Europe. Its members are students of 94 universities in 32 countries and they organize, among other things, presentations and trainings, scientific courses in their countries or abroad, career expos, and student exchanges.
