Student teams from AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, and Commenius University in Bratislava won the regional qualifications for the Freescale Cup. The winners will take part in European finals.
The Freescale Cup international competition has been organized for a few years by the Freescale Semiconductor company. The task of the participants is to build a small autonomous car using parts bought from the manufacturer (for a reduced price). These include the microcontroller and a set of components – chassis, CCD video recorder (thanks to which the car can “see” its route), powertrain and powertrain controller.
The students have to design an appropriate algorithm so that during the race, the car runs as quickly as possible, while sticking to the route (i.e. the line drawn on the floor). The vehicle also has to stop after crossing the finish line. Teams of up to 3 persons may participate in the challenge.
On Tuesday, regional qualifications for Poland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia were held at the Audiovisual Technology Centre in Wrocław. Teams from AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, and Commenius University in Bratislava were victorious in the competition and they will take part in the European finals on 28-29 April.
A total of 14 teams started in the qualifications, including a number from Wrocław University of Technology, but unfortunately, this time they didn’t manage to reach top places. It is worth noting that in the previous years, our teams took third place (Prague, 2012), and second place (Paris, 2013) in the European finals of the competition.
