Students of three scientific circles of Wrocław University of Technology are organizing a country-wide mathematics conference. - We want to discuss topics that we will not find in education programmes at our universities – says Hanna Loch, a fourth-year student of Mathematics at Wrocław University of Technology and co-organizer of the “O MatKo!” conference.
The conference agenda includes, for example, over 20 presentations, poster sessions, and lectures. - We are all the time working on the programme and new participants keep signing in for the conference. So far, there are about 50 of them – says Hanna Loch. - This a conference by the students for the students. We plan to talk about our mathematic fascinations. We divided the topics into the following blocks: theoretical, statistical, financial, and industrial mathematics – explains the co-organizer.
The authors of the presentations will seek mathematics in music, talk about differential geometry and deliberate about the model of a cow’s lifecycle. - Everyone will find something for him or her, both a formal logic fan and an industrial mathematic enthusiast – convinces Hanna Loch.
The initiative to organize the conference came from students of the Mathematics specialization at Wrocław University of Technology. They are members of three scientific circles: Mathematics, “Gauss” Mathematical Statistics, and Mathematical Engineering. The Foundation for the Development of Wrocław University of Technology is a co-organizer of the event. The students that will prepare the best presentation and poster, will be given a free license for the “Mathematica” program, funded by Wolfram Research, the sponsor of the conference. - It costs about 5 000 zloty, so I think it will be a valuable prize for the students – says Hanna Loch.
The country-wide Mathematics Conference “O MatKo!” will start on 25 October and will last three days. Apart from the scientific programme, time has also been reserved for sightseeing in Wrocław and integration activities.
