Is there a chance, in the times of sensationalism and chronic underinvestment of mass media, to raise new generations of journalists? Are there still mentors-masters in mass media, from whom their younger colleagues can learn?
These are the topics that students want to discuss with famous journalists on Friday, 28th November during the Mass Media Day, organized jointly by “Luz” Academic Radio, Wrocław University of Technology “Styk” TV channel and the “Pryzmat” editorial team.
“Mass media more and more forget about the old BBC’s principle that each information should be verified in two sources to be considered reliable. Today, web traffic and viewership figures are the most important. And this is visible.” – says Monika Maziak, “Luz” Academic Radio director – “We lack journalists who would scour archives, verify documents and try to reach many informers and experts. Many publish news without paying attention to their reliability. Often there is no time, but there is also lack of models or authorities that the youngest journalists could learn from in their work.” As the “Luz” director emphasizes, the students themselves suggested such topic of this year’s Mass Media Day. “They want to talk about what they see in TV or on websites, that is, the deterioration of journalism quality. They observe that more and more journalists become celebrities rather than masters in their profession.”
The Mass Media Day will be organized at Wrocław University of Technology for the second time. The list of participants includes: Aleksandra and Piotr Stanisławski, scientific journalists, authors of the Crazy Nauka website, Seweryn Blumsztajn, journalist and editor of “Gazeta Wyborcza”, Tomasz Machała, chief editor of the naTemat.pl website, Monika Piątkowska and Leszek Talko, press journalists, and Tomasz Terlikowski, director of “TV Republika”. The event will start at 3:30 PM in Bibliotech. Admittance is free for all interested, however registration is necessary (you can register here).
