The
European Symposium on Computer Security 2014 (ESORICS 2014) will start on 7th
September. The Wrocław University of Technology Institute of Mathematics and
Computer Science is the organizer of the 19th edition of the
symposium.
ESORICS is
one of the world’s most important scientific conferences on computer security.
It is always organized in Europe, but it has a global dimension – the
participants come from the leading academic and industrial research centres
from the entire world.
Computer
security specialists are facing great challenges today. The rapid development
of IT systems was not paralleled by an adequate effort in the area of security.
According to scientists, this is natural, as it is easier to make an effort to
create a functional system whose advantages are, to a larger or lesser degree,
obvious for the user, than spend funds on protections, which are not
spectacular and sometimes even impede the use of the system. Users and
decision-makers not always understand the seriousness of the situation in
relation to computer security.
The latest
developments provide a growing challenge for data protection, and especially
privacy protection. That’s why, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, PhD, the Polish
Inspector General for Personal Data Protection, will be one of the guests of
the conference.
One of the
conference sessions will be dedicated to efforts on ensuring privacy in a
technically considered way and implementation of the European slogan “privacy
by design”. Much is changing in this area. It is worth reminding that the Court
of Justice of European Union, in a judgment of May 2014, stated that “one may
turn to the search engine owner with a request to erase particular search
results containing one’s name and surname, if the right to privacy has priority
over the right to access to the results.” Technically, such “erasure” from the
web is not that easy, though.
The Wrocław
conference covers many areas – from strictly cryptographic techniques to the
issues of mobile systems security.
The National
Centre for Cryptology and the Inspector General for Personal Data
Protection took patronage of the conference. It is also supported by the
REC Global company from Wrocław and Huawei – a global potentate in the field of
telecommunication systems with headquarters in Shenzhen.
The
European Symposium on Computer Security 2014 (ESORICS 2014) Web Site in the
Wrocław University of Technology D-20 building will end on 11th
September.
