Bridge players from the Wrocław University of Technology “Ruch” AZS sport club won the Polish Champions title for the 7th time. In the final round, they outdid the opponents by over 60 points.
The final round saw a rivalry between Wrocław University of Technology and Konkret Chełmno. Our team won the round 237:176.6 and defended the title they won last year. In the match for third place, Bridge24.pl from Warsaw defeated RAL Poznań 74.8:64.
The championships were held in the Primate’s Palace in Warsaw. Our University representation was composed of: Cezary Balicki, Adam Żmudziński, Stanisław Gołębiowski, Włodzimierz Starkowski, Piotr Gawryś, and Michał Klukowski.
“The semi-final round, in which we had to challenge the favoured Bridge24.pl team from Warsaw, was really dramatic.” – said the coach of the team – “After 60 deals, our opponents were in the lead by 48.2 points and there were only 12 deals left. For the decisive phase, they chose four world champions: Pszczoła, Kwiecień, and the Italian couple Norberto Bocchi-Giorgio Duboina, invited specially for the championships. This is one of the best couples in the world, pillar of the Italian representation. Ready to accept our defeat, we decided to withdraw our best couple Balicki-Żmudziński, causing a feeling of relaxation in our rivals.” – continues the coach – “And a miracle happened! Our both couples played incredibly well and we defeated the dream team 62:11, and won the whole match 155:152.2.”
Stanisław Gołębiowski, the team coach, emphasized that the opposing team turned professional last year and they hired an additional Italian professional couple. There aren’t many teams in the world that could outplay them. “Our coup in the match can be compared to a football match in which one team loses 0:5 and in the last quarter they score 6 goals to win the match 6:5 with the World Champions themselves! We received great ovations and congratulations from the bridge society across the country for the style and the excitement evoked during the match.”
