Ilona Góral is the first laureate of the scholarship established by Danuta and Jerzy Leszczyński for the best student of the Faculty of Chemistry. The scholarship was founded by graduates of the Faculty as a way of expressing gratitude.

During their visit at Wrocław University of Technology in October 2013, Prof. Danuta Leszczyńska, an employee of the Jackson State Univeristy (USA) and her husband, Jerzy Leszczyński (both graduates of our Faculty of Chemistry) decided to establish an annual scholarship of 1000 USD for the best student of their home Faculty. They also plan to pay for a one-week visit in the USA of the Faculty’s best doctoral student. The Leszczyńskis signed an agreement with the Foundation for the Development of Wrocław University of Technology that will intermediate in paying the scholarship.

The Faculty of Chemistry jury, headed by Prof. Andrzej Ożyhar, nominated Ilona Góral for the scholarship.

Ilona Góral is starting the work on her BSc thesis in which she is going to examine the solubility of polymers and the morphology of various mixtures. Prof. Jacek Pigłowski, Director of the Polymers Technology and Engineering Division at the Faculty of Chemistry, is the promoter of her thesis. She is also studying a second field of study at our University: Mechanical Engineering and Machine Building at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

“What the two fields have in common is plastics. At Materials Engineering I’m examining how plastics can be modified on the molecular level. At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering I’m learning about plastics processing and related topics.” – says Ilona.

The student emphasizes that travelling is one of her hobbies. Therefore, she already bought, from the scholarship money, two airplane tickets to Bologna, for her and her brother, as a present for his 18th birthday. She also plans to spend the rest of the money on an airplane trip to Portugal next year.

The Danuta and Jerzy Leszczyńskis’ Scholarship is also a distinction for the Faculty of Chemistry itself, as this is the first time in the history of our University that its graduates decided to express their gratitude in this way.
