The Wrocław University of Technology mountain bikers won first place in the men’s team classification at the Student Polish Championships in Jelenia Góra. Representation of the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice turned out to be the best in the women’s team classification.
Marek Konwa, representing the Holy Cross University in Kielce, for the fourth time in a row won the title of individual champion in the men’s competition, while Sabina Zamroziak from the Academy of Physical Education in Kraków took the individual title in the women’s competition.
After a few days of rain, the conditions were very difficult along the entire route of the race. Dense mud that stuck to the bikes caused many defects. In spite of that, all the runs were held according to plan. The men’s race started at 12 o’clock. The cyclists had to make five laps. During the warm-up round and the beginning of the first round, Marek Konwa was cycling in a small group together with Piotr Kurczab and Marcin Kawalec (both from Wrocław University of Technology). Then, however, the representative of the Holy Cross University in Kielce broke away and travelled lonely to the finish line, which he crossed first. Piotr Kurczab took second place, and despite a protective way of going through downhill runs in the second part of the race, he managed to gain a secure advantage over Marcin Kawalec, who came third. The three athletes secured their participation in the Student World Championships in July. “I am very glad I have proved myself and my rivals that I am well prepared to represent Poland at the Student World Championships.” – said Piotr Kurczab after the race.
Apart from Piotr Kurczab and Marcin Kawalec, the Wrocław University of Technology representation included Patryk Kaczmarczyk, Paweł Wojczal, Wojciech Pawłowski, and Grzegorz Bem. Kamil Dziedzic has been their coach for the last five years.
