The game developed by members of the “TK Games” scientific circle proved the best among the 30 nominees for the competition. The winner of the contest for the game that will promote Wrocław as the European Capital of Culture 2016 was announced at a press conference on Thursday.
As a reward, the Wrocław University of Technology students obtained 180 000 PLN for the implementation of their game project.
The plot of the game starts when its protagonist finds an old map of Europe in a library. As we can read on wroclaw.gazeta.pl, mysterious signs point to Wrocław on the map, and one of the notes mentions a legendary treasure hidden in the city. The player looks for it, fulfilling various quests (which have names relating to Wrocław, e.g. “Solny Square” or “Guinness Record”), each being a separate mini-game.
The projects that took part in the competition were assessed by a jury headed by Krzysztof Maj, director of the ESK2016 Festival Centre. The remaining members of the jury were: Maciej Kuc (CD-Action computer game magazine), Paweł Marchewka (Techland company), Michał Bieniek (Visual Arts Curator at the ESK2016 Festival Centre), Mariusz Majta (Wrocław Promotion Office), and Małgorzata Syta from the Wrocław Centre for Teacher Performance Improvement.
“TK Games” is one of the largest scientific circles at Wrocław University of Technology. It consists of students and doctoral students (currently ca. 270 persons) interested in developing computer games. In the circle, they may have the role of game designer, level designer, programmer, computer graphic, recording engineer, tester or project owner. Piotr Sobolewski is the coordinator of the project that has won the competition organized by the Municipal Office. The game doesn’t have a name yet.
The “TK Games” scientific circle invites for a meeting on Friday, at which its members will present the victorious project and will talk about the loop-holes and nuances of launching one’s first game. This will be a presentation by Maciej Walaszczyk, author of “Quick Numbers” (the game can be downloaded here). The meeting will start at 5 PM in room 205, C-1 building.
